An elementary finite element exercise to stimulate computational thinking in engineering education

In this paper, an elementary exercise that can strengthen computational thinking in engineering analysis and design is outlined discussed. The a simple finite element assignment designed for the M.Sc. students Mechanical Civil Engineering. It comprises two-member frame with variety of loading be solved manually without using any computer programming. Individual data allocated to each student, they have been asked report their results like reaction forces, moments stresses. Thereafter modelled same structure commercially available method (FEM) software ABAQUS, from which substantial output file created such problem. final stage, student highlights ABAQUS compared commented upon obtained manual calculations. Since individual, it provides justifiable connection between individual mind, printed outputs complicated FEM software. Implementing course at Aberdeen University has very successful. This enabled relate thinking, engineering. concluded exercises stimulate education. Moreover, used other fields where applicable, either university level or Professional Career Development courses
